Update from the Mayor

In these uncertain times dealing with the COVID-19 outbreak it is wonderful to see how the residents of Cullom are using precautions and abiding with the Governor’s mandate. It’s especially heartwarming to see some windows decorated and even some sidewalk chalk drawings! I’m sure the Mess Hall and Community Market appreciate your patronage too. It’s important to support our local businesses.

Tuesday night the Village Board held the Regular Scheduled Board Meeting. Safeguards were taken by holding the meeting in the small room of Community Building with members separating themselves as required.  I would like to fill you in on a few things discussed at the meeting.

* Notified by Republic Service that starting March 31st there will be a change in garbage pick-up.  Only garbage and recycling containers will be emptied.  Nothing set next to the containers or bulk items will be picked up.  As soon as the ban is lifted they will let us know when they will resume with the bulk pick-ups.

* Luckily, we were able to hold our Public Hearing on the New Water Tower Project before the ban on gathering in public.  We had a small group, and answered questions. The application has been submitted and we may hear something by the first of next month if the loan will be approved. Will keep you up-to-date.

* Brush Pick-up Service will resume April 10th please, refresh reading the rules involved with this service, posted online, at the Post Office, Mess Hall and Cullom Community Market.

* Garbage/water bills will be mailed April 1st; the Board’s decision is to waive the service charge due to the economic situation facing many at this time. For those who selected to make payments, please note the adjusted amount due on your bill.

* Within the next few weeks residents and businesses will be mailed more information about the water meter installations, water material inventory, cross-connection survey and the water consumer confidence report. We hope to begin installation of some meters later this year. Billing will not change until all meters are installed.

* Don’t forget to fill out the 2020 Census, it only takes a few minutes online. www.2020Census.gov

* The Board approved to begin the process of writing an ordinance to allow chickens (hens only) to be raised in the Village.  There will be restrictions. I’ll make more information available next month.

* Unfortunately, the Community Easter Egg Hunt is cancelled. I hope you will hold your own hunt at your house.

So, stay safe and well, Barbara
